Our curriculum, taught by trained and qualified music educators, is an adaptation of the
Kodály approach to music education, modified by Gordon Music Learning Theory.
We offer a once weekly readiness program, called
Crickets(TM),
for four- to five-year olds. The formal training levels meet on Wednesday
evenings, Saturday mornings. Those levels are:
-
Beginner I (ages 5-7)
-
Beginner II (ages 7-9)
-
Intermediate I (ages 9-10)
-
Intermediate II (ages 9-11)
-
Intermediate III (ages 10-13) and
-
Solfas I, II, III, & IV (ages 11-16)
Children from Intermediate III are required to re-audition for entrance into the
Concert Choir. Students who complete our training program have the equivalent of at
least a first year college level of music education. They are trained in musicianship,
including theory, harmony, dictation, rhythm and solfege in major and minor keys as well
as in all modes. They may also have had experience in composition.
Furthermore, they
have had intensive training in healthy vocal technique from childhood through
adolescence, leading to a personal understanding of the voice, its physical properties
and its care. Children in CCM also gain important experience with self-paced learning,
mental concentration, a heightened personal and social awareness, and flexibility.
Ours is one of the oldest, most distinguished and enviable programs of choral music
education for a community children's choir in the United States. We are proud to serve
as a model of how to effectively and efficiently teach music to children and what they
can accomplish musically.
